Great Places to Fly in New England
The summer flying season is in high gear! If you live in, or fly to New England, here’s a list of great places to visit, including airport information, courtesy of the funplacestofly.com.
Connecticut
121 Restaurant, Oxford, CT
This great restaurant has an exceptional menu and service is located right on the runway of the Waterbury Oxford Airport (OXC). Pull your plane right up to restaurant — more parking is available at Key Air across the runway. Note: Watch the wires on RWY 36 approach.

AeroDiner, North Windham, CT
In the mood for a great old-fashioned diner? Fly in to Windham (IJD), park at Windham Aviation, sign in and ask for directions to the AeroDiner. The nice folks there will tell you to walk out and over the hill to Boston Post Road and then up the street to the restaurant about a 1/2 mile away.

Historic Essex, Essex, CT
Fly in to KSNC and take a cab to Essex. This beautiful small New England town is filled with quiant shops, boutiques, cafes, etc. Enjoy lunch at Olive Oyl’s as you sit overlooking the Connecticut River.

Wings Sports Bar & Grill, Hartford, CT
This great little restaurant is located in the Atlantic Aviation terminal at Hartford-Brainard Airport (HFD). They offer great prices and excellent food, and easy to get in and out of as there is a nice sod strip for a soft field landing, if you choose. Contact 129.6 for parking instructions after landing.

Massachusetts
Barnstable Municipal Airport-Boardman/Polando Field, Hyannis, MA
With several restaurants within walking distance from Barnstable Muni Boardman/Polando Field (HYA), this is a great place to fly in and have lunch or dinner. Try Wianno’s Grille, a 5 minute walk from the airport. Plus, the crew at Griffin Aviation is great.

Fitchburg Airport, Fitchburg, MA
There’s lots to see and do around Fitchburg Muni (FIT). Some of the highlights include a restaurant on site, Budget car rental on the field, hotels, nearby fishing, hiking, hunting, camping, and boating. It’s located a short 30 minutes from Worcester, one hour from Boston, and is surrounded by great fall foliage areas.

According to funplacestofly.com, this is the best diner in the area with very high quality food and a great view of the Chatham Muni (CQX) Airport.

Nancy’s Air Field Café, Stow, MA
This gem is a great little spot for breakfast near Minute Man Air Field (6B6). Enjoy unique dishes and home baked goods. Open early for breakfast, but also open for lunch and dinner. The runway is paved but a little rough.

Northampton Sights and Dining, Northampton, MA
Northampton (7B2) Airport is a great place to visit—take a 15 minute walk or taxi into a great college town with lots of shops, galleries, and excellent restaurants, such as Paul Elizabeth’s for lunch.

Vermont
Basin Harbor Club, Vergennes, VT
A great family destination resort with good restaurants, swimming, tennis, golf, and hiking. The airport has a very nice 3000 foot grass strip and is right on Lake Champlain.

Inn at Essex, Essex, VT
The restaurant located at the Inn is run by the students of the New England Culinary Institute, so expect delicious food with a great ambiance.
