More Great Places to Fly in the Northeast
Due to the wonderful response we received from our previous “Great Places to Fly” article, here’s another list of even more places to fly this summer in the Northeast, including airport information, courtesy of Fun Places to Fly.
New York
Finger Lakes Soaring Club, Dansville, NY
Operating weekends from Dansville Airport, soaring rides and training flights are available with prior notice. Choose from five restaurants within a five minute walk, plus two very nice restaurants — Jack’s Gaslight and the Old Madrid — an easy 20 minute walk.

Fishers Island, Fishers Island, NY
If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway, consider Fishers Island, located at the eastern entrance to Long Island Sound, approximately two miles off the southeastern coast of Connecticut opposite Stonington. Visit the Fishers Island Bike Shop, rent a bike, and explore.

Gateway to the Adirondack Mountains, Saranac Lake, NY
As the major air center for the Tri-Lakes Area and Northern New York State, the Adirondack Regional Airport and surrounding area offers a full range of facilities and services. Whether visiting Olympic venues, engaging in winter or summer recreational activities, bird watching or leaf peeking, the Tri-Lakes area promises a truly memorable visit. This FBO is open from 7:00 AM – 8:00 PM daily; Airport Diner is open daily from 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM except Wednesday; rental cars available.

Lake Erie Wine Country, Westfield, NY
This area offers 25 wineries amid 30,000 acres of vineyards, strung out along the south shore of lake Erie between Dunkirk KDKK and Erie, PA KERI. Tastings, tours, concerts numerous B&B’s, restaurants and other attractions can be found in the area, including the renowned resort Chautauqua Institution on the west shore of the lake with the same name.

The Vintage Aircraft Group, Inc, Albion, NY
If you’re into vintage aircraft, do yourself a favor and visit this friendly volunteer group involved in the restoration of historic aircraft. Current projects are a Fleet Cornell (PT-26) a Stinson V77, a T-33, and several other Pt-19 &26 models. Open to the public on Wednesdays and weekends during the summer. For fly-ins, contact UNICOM 123.00 for advisory. Parachute activity is available at this field.

Air Victory Museum, Lumberton, NJ
If you’re an aircraft military history buff, stop by the Air Victory Museum for a day of fun and education. Aircraft displays include an Our A-4C Skyhawk Bu No. 145072, A-7B Corsair II Bu No. 154550, F-4A Phantom II Bu No. 148273, and more. Also see an extensive collection of military uniforms from the U.S., Canada, Russia, China, Scotland, Great Britain, and Thailand dating from World War I to the present. Take a walk through the gallery and enjoy a pictorial history of aviation as well as historical articles that line the walls. When you get hungry, eat at the Airport Cafe for lunch.

Battleship New Jersey, Camden, NJ
America’s most decorated Battleship is now an exciting museum, open for tours, events and overnight encampments. On the great guided tour lasting about two hours, not only do you see exhibits of artifacts from the ship’s past, but you are put into the exhibit as you go through the tour route. Sit in the chair from which Admiral Halsey commanded the fleet; stretch out on the bunks where the sailors slept; climb into the 16” gun turret and learn how the projectiles were loaded. Located 18 miles from the airport, with the NJ aquarium close-by. Pre-plan and arrange for your own ground transportation.
